The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is heating up, and African teams are leaving it all on the pitch. With nine automatic spots up for grabs, the battle to represent the continent on the biggest stage in world football is fiercer than ever. While some teams are almost certain to qualify, others are fighting tooth and nail to secure their tickets. So, which African nations are leading the charge?

The African Qualifiers So Far

Unlike before when Africa had limited slots, FIFA’s expansion to a 48-team World Cup means CAF now has nine automatic qualification spots plus one possible intercontinental playoff slot. This has made the qualifiers even more competitive, with teams giving their all in every match.

As of now, no team has mathematically sealed their place, but some countries are in a prime position to qualify. Here’s a breakdown of how things are shaping up across the groups:

Group A: Egypt & Burkina Faso Leading the Pack

Egypt is currently topping the table, and with Mohamed Salah and co. in fine form, they are looking strong for qualification. Burkina Faso is not far behind, making this a tight contest.

Group B: DR Congo & Senegal in a Close Race

DR Congo is surprisingly leading the group, but Senegal, with their world-class stars like Sadio Mane, is keeping the pressure on.

Group C: South Africa Holding the Edge

Bafana Bafana is showing their strength, leading the group. Nigeria, however, is struggling and needs to step up if they want to make it to the World Cup.

Group D: Cape Verde & Cameroon Fighting for Supremacy

Cape Verde is causing an upset by leading their group, but Cameroon is a World Cup regular, and you can never count them out.

Group E: Morocco’s Dominance

After their historic semi-final run in the 2022 World Cup, Morocco is proving why they are Africa’s top team. They are comfortably leading their group.

Group F: Ivory Coast & Gabon Going Head-to-Head

The AFCON champions, Ivory Coast, are in top form and leading their group, but Gabon is not far behind.

Group G: Algeria Looking Strong

Algeria is leading the group, and with players like Riyad Mahrez, they are in a solid position to qualify.

Group H: Tunisia On Course for Another World Cup

Tunisia is one of Africa’s most consistent teams at the World Cup, and they are once again leading their group.

Group I: Ghana in the Driver’s Seat

The Black Stars are leading their group and are on course for another World Cup appearance.

Final Thoughts

While no African team has officially booked their spot yet, some teams are almost guaranteed to make it. Morocco, Ivory Coast, Egypt, and Senegal are among the favorites, while teams like Nigeria and Cameroon will need to fight harder if they want to qualify.

As we count down to the final qualification matches, one thing is certain—African football is alive and kicking! Which team are you backing to make it? Drop your thoughts in the comments! 🇳🇬⚽🔥
