“Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, and riches take wing. Only one thing endures and that is character.” – Horace Greeley
Celebrities are often held to higher standards because of their visibility and influence. Consciously or not, they shape the behavior and expectations of their fans. In many cases, they are architects of their own fame and, sometimes, of their own downfall.
Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, Nigeria’s Afrobeats superstar, has recently found himself at the center of controversy due to his actions during a live performance.
The incident occurred in Denver, Colorado, when Burna Boy reportedly asked a woman and her companion to leave his concert because she was sleeping. While some argued that ticket holders should have the freedom to enjoy the concert as they please, Burna Boy addressed the situation in an Instagram story, saying:
“I will gladly get cancelled if we are in a world where you can treat me like a stripper, slap my ass and tell me to keep dancing cuz you throw $100 at me.”
Sleeping at a concert is unusual enough, after all, the energy, the music, and the crowd make nodding off nearly impossible. However, the woman involved, Chaltu Jateny, shared her side on Instagram, explaining:
“I have been depressed before I attended Burna Boy’s show because my daughter’s baby daddy passed away.” She added that the incident at the concert worsened her emotional state, drawing attention to the personal impact of the encounter.
Burna Boy has, in the past, reacted aggressively to disruptions during his performances, including fans climbing on stage, but this incident has sparked widespread discussion, making it one of the most talked-about moments of his career to date.
The Fallout
Following this controversy two of Burna’s stops for his “No Sign of Weakness” tour – Minneapolis and Chicago, were abruptly marked as cancelled on Ticketmaster with no prior notice from the artist or his management. While there have been no official explanations . Fans speculate that the cancellations are connected to the backlash from the incident, as some had called for a boycott of Burna Boy and his shows.
This situation has also reignited conversations about the pressures of fame and the boundaries between artists and their audiences. Some defend Burna Boy, arguing that entertainers deserve respect and should be able to control their stage environment. Others see the incident as a lapse in judgment that highlights the delicate balance between authority and accountability in the public eye.
